Learning abstracts

In my experience, most people who like figurative artwork don't strike me as fans of abstract art. As an artist, though, I love both. And both are demanding in different ways! With figurative, you're going to have to perform well, drawing the figures and objects nicely, and then painting them as faithfully as possible! But abstract? There's no structure whatsoever. Most of the work must be done with colour and shapes, composition and pure imagination. So, when I get too much of structure, I look for abstraction... and vice versa!
But I'm not sure anyone will be along for the ride. Art lovers like what they like! They don't need to stick around for my struggles to learn abstract art. But... even if they're not, at least this blog will serve as a record of my own struggles toward excellence in abstraction. Thanks!
